Secure PDF Redaction Versus Black Boxes

Why redacting a PDF must remove hidden text and objects, not merely cover their appearance.

Is placing a black rectangle over text secure redaction?

No. The original text can remain extractable underneath a visual overlay.

What real redaction means

Sensitive content needs to be removed from document data, not just covered visually. Check text streams, annotations, form fields, metadata, hidden layers and embedded attachments.

Rasterizing a PDF

Our browser redaction method rebuilds pages from rendered images and covers selected pixels. That removes original PDF text objects from the new document, but it also loses searchable text and interactive content, and must be visually checked page by page.

Inspect unexpected copies of sensitive data

Names and identifiers may appear on several pages or within attachments, XMP metadata, comments and link targets. A single rectangle on one page is not a full-document sanitization.

Before you share

Download the newly produced file, try extracting text, inspect metadata and all pages, and confirm the desired information cannot be recovered. Do not treat any tool’s success message as a certified security audit.

Questions and answers

Is cropping enough to hide a confidential margin?

No. Crop boxes can hide content without deleting it.

Why does redaction remove selectable text?

Rasterization creates a new image representation rather than keeping the source text streams.
